starryai – AI Art Generator Review
Overview
starryai is an AI art generator currently boasting 3,031,198 total installs and a solid 4.178218/5 rating (with over 73,000 user reviews) within the Art & Design category. The app’s core function centers around transforming textual prompts into visual art – offering users the ability to generate images resembling paintings, photographs, or completely novel artistic creations, all driven by artificial intelligence. The free-to-use model is a key differentiator, attracting a broad audience seeking accessible creative tools. The app's description promises “breathtaking visuals effortlessly,” which, while ambitious, is supported by the relatively high user rating and install count suggesting a degree of success in delivering on that promise.
Key Features
- Text-to-Image Generation: The primary feature, allowing users to input text prompts describing their desired artwork – ranging from simple requests like “a cat wearing a hat” to complex scene descriptions incorporating artistic styles (e.g., "Van Gogh style portrait of a robot").
- Style Presets: starryai offers pre-configured style presets that dramatically influence the generated image, categorized into options like ‘Realistic,’ ‘Anime,’ ‘Fantasy,’ ‘Digital Art,’ and more. This provides instant stylistic variation without requiring users to master complex prompting techniques.
- Prompt Weighting (Advanced): A feature allowing users to assign weights to different parts of their prompt, emphasizing certain elements over others. This is crucial for fine-tuning results and achieving specific compositions. The app clearly indicates this as an advanced setting, suggesting it might require experimentation.
- Negative Prompting: The ability to specify what not to include in the generated image - effectively directing the AI away from unwanted elements or styles. This significantly improves control over the output.
- Image Upscaling (Limited): The app offers a basic image upscaling feature, increasing resolution for larger prints or digital displays. However, this functionality is noticeably limited compared to dedicated upscaling apps.
- Community Gallery: A section showcasing images created by other users, providing inspiration and demonstrating the potential of the platform.
Strengths
- Accessibility: The free-to-use model removes a significant barrier to entry for aspiring artists and creative individuals who may be hesitant to invest in expensive AI art tools.
- Ease of Use: The intuitive interface makes generating images surprisingly straightforward, even for users with no prior experience in digital art or prompting AI models. The style presets drastically simplify the process.
- Broad Creative Applications: starryai’s versatility allows for a huge range of creative applications – from creating concept art and illustrations to generating surreal imagery and personalized gifts.
- Strong Community Engagement (Based on Reviews): The large install base and high rating suggest a vibrant community actively using and enjoying the app, contributing to its continued success. The user gallery provides tangible proof of impressive creations.
- Effective Prompting System: While complex prompt engineering can yield outstanding results, the basic system is surprisingly effective for generating decent images with minimal effort.
Areas for Improvement
- Image Quality Consistency: A recurring theme in user reviews is inconsistency in image quality. Some users generate stunning artwork, while others receive blurry or distorted results – dependent on prompts and settings.
- Limited Upscaling Capabilities: The included upscaling feature feels underdeveloped and doesn’t provide a significant boost in quality compared to alternatives. Investing in more robust upscaling technology would be highly beneficial.
- Prompt Understanding Nuance: The AI sometimes struggles with complex or abstract prompts, requiring multiple iterations and adjustments to achieve the desired outcome. Improved prompt processing capabilities are necessary.
- Lack of Advanced Features (Compared to Competitors): Compared to some of the more established AI art generators like Midjourney or DALL-E 2, starryai lacks certain advanced features such as iterative refinement, detailed control over specific elements, and greater stylistic flexibility.
- Processing Time: Generating images can sometimes be slow, particularly with complex prompts or during peak usage times. Optimizing the backend processing would improve user experience.
User Experience
The user interface is clean, modern, and relatively uncluttered. The layout prioritizes ease of inputting prompts and selecting styles. The initial onboarding process is straightforward, guiding users through the core features. However, navigating the more advanced options – like prompt weighting and negative prompting – can feel slightly overwhelming for novice users. The visual feedback provided during image generation could be improved; a progress indicator beyond a simple loading animation would provide better context to the user. The gallery is well-organized and easy to browse.
Value for Money
As a free app, starryai offers exceptional value for money. It provides access to a powerful AI art generator without any upfront cost or subscription fees. While the limitations in image quality and features compared to paid alternatives are noticeable, it’s an excellent starting point for beginners exploring the world of AI-generated art. The ability to experiment freely makes it an ideal tool for learning and developing creative skills.
Conclusion
starryai is a commendable entry into the rapidly evolving landscape of AI art generators. Its accessibility, ease of use, and broad range of creative applications make it a compelling choice for both beginners and experienced artists alike. While areas for improvement – particularly regarding image quality consistency and advanced features – exist, its strengths significantly outweigh its weaknesses, especially considering its free-to-use model. It’s a solid platform with strong potential and represents a significant step forward in democratizing access to creative tools. We recommend downloading starryai to explore the exciting possibilities of AI art generation, but users should temper their expectations regarding consistently high-quality output and be prepared for some experimentation to achieve desired results.

This is actually a very nice ai text to image app. I use it quite a bit when I'm mobile and can't access my home Stable Diffusion setup. I had previously given a 2 star review because multiple times in free mode all ad turned my phone's volume up and woke up my spouse. Not cool, man. They seem to have stopped letting ads turn your phone volume up tho, so I'm writing this revised review. Carry on.

Pretty mad right now. App is cool. Had an option to earn credits by watching ads. I did that every day, saving up for a project I was planning. Logged in today and all my credits are gone. The artworks I had are gone too and there is no option to watch ads now. I assume they deleted that option to prevent people from accumulating a decent amount of credits for free. But deleting the credits I had already earned (over 200) is wrong, especially after I watched all those ads. Not cool!

Back in July 2022 I gave this app 5 stars. Now I rate it two stars because the images are not custom. It gives you several pictures that are the closest to the topic. What happened to that actual AI and not the Google AI image sort of thing that's going on now. I use to enjoy watching it create images and the anticipation of the final product. Now 5 seconds later you get a notification of your Now "images" are ready. They don't match up. Literally not stupid here.

UPDATE: Its increased in price. In walking away from this trash fire. WAY to expensive for premium. Says it's $7.99/month. When you tap on it, there's no option for $7.99/month. There's only two options $11.99/month and $99.99/year. This app is EXTREMELY limited. Don't be fooled by the multiple "options" and "features". It makes generic images, no matter how simple the prompt is. It's not worth the money or the time. Plus, constant ads you're REQUIRED to watch, even with premium.

Great for one off work, also wonderful for evolving on going pieces. One complaint is there is no way to pay one monthly fee for unrestricted use. When you're hunting a specific image and need to keep evolving you don't want to worry about running out of credits when you already pay a monthly fee. This is a very sticky point for me and I can see it causing me to leave the app behind. Also throws out exact duplicates when "evolving" occasionally. Wasted credit with no returns.

New Review after using for a couple of months: App has gone downhill. It was one of the best on the app store when i first downloaded it. Unfortunately, it is starting to have tons of limitations on what inputs you can use. On top of that, it is starting to ignore a lot of the prompts that are being put in. App started strong and has only gotten worse. Old REV: No limitations or stupid Moderation Filters. You can create anything you like. The art is beautiful, and the whole app is easy to use.

This a pretty neat app that lets you create art with words and phrases you come up with! Only thing I'm not a fan of, is that you need credits to do anything. It generally wants you to pay money to do this, but there are ways to gain credits without doing so with daily challenges which is shareing you art with different websites, and watching an ad or two. If your patient and just want to play with this once in a while to see what you come up with, than I highly recommend this!

I don't like to spend a lot on subscription apps but there are a few exceptions. Starry was one I was considering due to the versatility and quality UNTIL they updated their interface. Now instead of standing out as one with above average potential, they look like all the other cheap quality apps jumping on the text to AI bandwagon. Based on the results I'm getting now I can't see paying for it. Disappointing.

I'm loving the app so far! I love that you don't need to create an account just to try it out first. I love how it takes practice to make something cool. I love being able to see everyone else's creations too. The only thing that irks me is sometimes it has me watch an ad before an image generates & when it's over, it says reward granted. However after my image is created, I've lost a credit. What was I rewarded with then? Seems to be a bug so please look into correcting this in the next update

New rating. These updates are ridiculous. You get comfortable with a design style and the apps abilities. Then they come in and take it all out. Before, you could retouch a picture with 95% the same and just take off, say, a freckle. Finished product was perfect. Now, automatic changes to 30% so removing a freckle becomes a picture of a different person. That was an essential function! Additionally, not stacking the 4 pictures someone makes any longer has now created clutter. Please return these
