Adobe Express: AI Photo, Video Review
Overview
Adobe Express is positioned as the accessible entry point into Adobe’s creative ecosystem, targeting users who need to quickly generate marketing materials and brand assets without a deep understanding of design principles or extensive software skills. With over 89 million installs and a robust 4.56-star rating from 551,554 users, it represents a significant investment by Adobe in a simplified, AI-assisted creative tool. The core premise – “AI-powered photo & video creation—fast, fun, and effortless with Quick Actions” – immediately suggests a focus on ease of use and speed, aiming to democratize design for businesses and individuals alike. This review will assess whether the app delivers on this promise, examining its key features, usability, and overall value proposition.
Key Features
Adobe Express boasts a comprehensive suite of tools designed around streamlined content creation. Notable features include:
- Quick Actions: The headline feature allows users to generate social media graphics, posters, videos, and more with a single tap based on prompts like "Promote My Business" or “Event Flyer.” These actions leverage AI to suggest layouts, fonts, images, and color palettes tailored to the chosen category.
- Templates Library: Over 1000 professionally designed templates are categorized by industry and purpose (social media, marketing, presentations, etc.). Users can choose a template as a starting point and then customize it with their own content.
- AI-Powered Editing Tools: The app utilizes AI for tasks like background removal, object selection, text replacement, and even video editing suggestions based on uploaded footage.
- Video Editor: A surprisingly robust video editor allows users to combine clips from their Gallery, add transitions, music (from Adobe’s library or user uploads), sound effects, and custom text overlays. It supports 4K resolution export.
- Photo Editor: Includes features like filters, adjustments (brightness, contrast, saturation), cropping, masking, and the aforementioned AI-powered editing capabilities.
- Brand Kit: Users can create a Brand Kit to store their logo, colors, fonts, and other brand assets, ensuring consistent branding across all created content.
- Collaboration Tools: Allows for sharing designs with team members for feedback and approvals.
Strengths
Several aspects of Adobe Express contribute to its popularity:
- Ease of Use: The intuitive interface and Quick Actions truly shine, making it accessible even to users with no prior design experience. The drag-and-drop functionality is simple and effective.
- AI Integration: The AI features are genuinely useful, accelerating the content creation process and providing intelligent suggestions that elevate designs. The object selection tool is particularly impressive in its accuracy.
- Variety of Templates: The sheer volume of templates caters to a wide range of needs and industries, significantly reducing the design time for users.
- Cross-Platform Accessibility: While primarily a mobile app, Adobe Express offers a web version that mirrors most of the functionality, allowing for creation on desktop or tablet.
Areas for Improvement
Despite its strengths, Adobe Express isn’t without limitations:
- Template Limitations: While abundant, many templates are starting to feel somewhat repetitive and lack truly unique design elements. More diverse and cutting-edge options would be welcome.
- AI Quirks: The AI is occasionally inconsistent – sometimes brilliant with suggestions, other times producing odd results that require manual correction. Further refinement of the algorithms is needed.
- Limited Advanced Controls: While great for beginners, experienced designers might find themselves frustrated by the lack of granular control over certain design elements (e.g., precise color adjustments).
- Music Library Restrictions: The music library, while helpful, has limitations on commercial use and requires a paid subscription to unlock more extensive options.
User Experience
The user experience is generally positive. The app’s clean interface, responsive touch controls, and intuitive navigation make it a pleasure to use. The onboarding process is well-executed, guiding new users through the key features. However, navigating the vast template library can be overwhelming at first, and searching effectively requires refining your search terms. The video editor's timeline could benefit from a more streamlined interface for complex edits.
Value for Money
Adobe Express offers a free version with substantial functionality – enough for basic social media content creation and simple marketing materials. The subscription tiers (Premium and Photographer) unlock advanced features, expanded template access, premium stock assets, and remove Adobe branding. The pricing is competitive considering it's part of the Adobe ecosystem, but users should carefully assess their needs to determine if the paid subscriptions offer sufficient value.
Conclusion
Adobe Express represents a successful attempt to bridge the gap between professional design tools and everyday user needs. It’s a powerful tool for anyone who wants to create engaging marketing content quickly and easily, particularly those new to design. While it has some limitations in terms of advanced features and occasional AI inconsistencies, its ease of use, combined with robust templates and integrated AI capabilities, makes it a worthwhile app – especially considering the free version availability. Adobe continues to iterate on this product and future updates focusing on refining the AI engine and expanding the template library are eagerly anticipated. It’s highly recommended for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals seeking a simple yet effective way to produce professional-looking marketing materials.

The website version is easier to navigate, mobile is a little clunky in the sense that when you try to move images or text, the interface is slow to respond and ends up glitching all over the screen and not going where you want it to go, or it's hard to interact with it because you can't zoom in with it. It's also difficult to get to the extra stuff like the template designs or backgrounds but it does have all the options the website has.

Forced new app on me, it sucks. can't use it offline now. Can't use my old designs, without it converting to. Which makes no sense. Projects takes a while to load. Takes multiple clicks to do something so simple. It resizes all designs to 1000x1200. They want you to pay to get you original size back. Adobe always said the same thing for years, that they are listening to feedback. But they don't listen to any feedback. People have been saying that this new app have sucked for years.

I hated the previous version, and find the new app much more user friendly! There's definitely a learning curve, it looked more complicated at first, but once I got my bearings, I loved it. Particularly love how you can just try out several pictures without constantly going back to the search tool and retyping what you're looking for. HOWEVER CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY WE DON'T GET A JUSTIFY TEXT OPTION ? Sorry for screaming, but it's just SO basic that the absence of it is beyond me.

I mean... I've only used it for like an hour but I've had no problems creating a custom gamerpic so I'm giving it five stars. Everything is super accessible and I didn't need to watch a tutorial video for anything. $9.99 is too steep a monthly subscription for a photo editing app. I would definitely pay that one time. I will have to discontinue use and cancel before my free trial ends. You can't say I'm not fair, Adobe.

App has only crashed once on me but it didn't lose any of my changes. This is great for people that get creative ideas while in line for coffee and don't want to lose it. It is perfectly functional without the paid content. The only suggestion I would make at this time is the ability to isolate text animation to certain lines/words. I recommend combining this with a .gif maker app for simple loops and file compression.

Adobe Express is as always a breath of fresh air performing exactly what it says it can do! No surprises with ads running after every screen change. Adobe Express is by far one of the greatest apps one can choose to edit or change with the filters available! For more years than this 70 year old Graphic Artist wants to admit to Adobe has always been my go to Company! Don't even ask me about Photoshop! The number "1" program for professionals across the Globe! I'm just sayin'...

The whole app is just a web wrapper. Processing isn't done on the device, and if you leave it in the background it has to "reconnect" to the editor. You have to backtrack through 2 menus when creating a new project just to get an option to use media from your device, and on top of all of that it can't even export a video as a GIF. Adobe was once the standard, now it's pathetic garbage pandering to generative AI and influencers instead of actual working artists.

This is currently the top mobile video and photo editing tool available, featuring all the latest AI capabilities and everything you might need for your business and professional life. I've been a long-time user of Adobe products, particularly Photoshop and Express, which I've thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, due to recent financial challenges caused by widespread greed, I may have to stop using them, as I can no longer afford it.

The whole experience with Adobe Express sucks. Absolute garbage. All I wanted was to make a collage of 4 pictures on each of 30 pages. But there is no way to move pictures from one page to another?! How stupid is that? Continually showing a white screen instead of the page I just created. Then, when I try to download it, the web site tells me "failed to fetch" and the app keeps crashing. I'm forced to download each page separately, and even then it keeps crashing. I would NEVER pay for this.

This app is fantastic. I use Photoshop and illustrator, but this serves me well when I don't feel like breaking out illustrator, as I can do a graphic in minutes (if not under one). The software is somewhat intuitive, but the nuances are just something I discovered accidentally. I really love the app. Easy, intuitive, and a lot more powerful than I expected a phone app to be.
