Overview
SoundCloud, boasting over 422 million installations and a robust rating of 4.67 out of 5 stars from 7.3 million users, remains a dominant force in music discovery and streaming. The app’s core mission is to connect listeners with a vast library of music – currently encompassing 300 million+ tracks from 30 million artists across 193 countries – catering to diverse tastes ranging from mainstream pop to niche underground genres. The app’s description, “What’s next in music and audio is first on SoundCloud,” sets the expectation for being a pioneering platform, and largely, it delivers. It's fundamentally built around user-generated content, distinguishing itself from traditional streaming services by prioritizing independent artists and a highly collaborative community feel. This approach has cultivated a vibrant ecosystem where mixtapes, DJ sets, live recordings, and original tracks coexist, offering listeners unparalleled variety.
Key Features
SoundCloud’s feature set is expansive and deliberately designed to facilitate both discovery and engagement:
- Track Discovery: The app utilizes a powerful algorithm combined with user-driven trends to surface new music. The "Explore" tab is the primary entry point, showcasing trending tracks, popular artists, and curated playlists based on genre and mood.
- Artist Profiles: Each artist has their own dedicated profile page where listeners can discover all of their releases, follow them for updates, and directly support them through SoundCloud’s monetization tools (subscriptions and one-time donations).
- Playlist Creation & Sharing: Users can create and share playlists with others, fostering a sense of community. Playlists are categorized by genre, mood, activity, or any other descriptor the user desires, facilitating targeted music experiences.
- SoundCloud Radio: This feature generates personalized radio stations based on selected tracks or artists, offering continuous playback of similar music. The algorithm learns listener preferences over time, improving accuracy.
- Live Streaming: SoundCloud supports live streaming of performances and DJ sets, providing a direct connection between artists and fans.
- Offline Listening (Premium Feature): Subscribers gain the ability to download tracks for offline listening, crucial for users with limited data plans or those traveling internationally.
- SoundCloud Go: The premium subscription unlocks ad-free listening, higher audio quality, and access to exclusive content.
Strengths
Several factors contribute to SoundCloud’s enduring popularity:
- Vast Content Library: The sheer volume of music available – 300 million+ tracks – is a significant advantage. It's far more comprehensive than many competing streaming services in terms of niche genres and independent releases.
- Emphasis on Independent Artists: SoundCloud genuinely champions emerging talent, providing them with a platform to gain exposure and build their careers. This fosters a strong sense of community and authenticity.
- Community Features: The ability to follow artists, engage in comments, and create playlists encourages interaction and builds connections among users.
- Mixtape Culture Preservation: SoundCloud has successfully preserved the spirit of mixtapes, offering a unique listening experience that’s largely absent from mainstream streaming platforms.
- Live Streaming Integration: Offering live streaming capabilities makes the app a hub for real-time music experiences.
Areas for Improvement
Despite its strengths, SoundCloud isn't without areas needing attention:
- Audio Quality (Free Tier): The free tier’s audio quality is noticeably lower than that offered to premium subscribers. This can be a deterrent for users seeking high-fidelity listening.
- Search Functionality: While the search function works reasonably well, it could benefit from more refined filtering options and improved accuracy in identifying tracks, especially those with unconventional titles or artist names.
- User Interface Consistency: Certain sections of the app feel slightly disjointed, lacking a unified visual style across all features. A more streamlined interface would improve usability.
- Monetization for Artists (Transparency): While SoundCloud provides tools for artists to monetize their music, the transparency around revenue distribution and algorithm prioritization could be improved.
User Experience
The user experience is generally good, particularly for core functionalities like track discovery and playlist creation. The app’s interface is relatively intuitive, making it easy for new users to navigate and start listening. However, the abundance of features can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially initially. The “Explore” tab, while powerful, can occasionally overwhelm users with a deluge of trending tracks – a more curated approach might be beneficial. Navigation between different sections (e.g., Explore, Library, Artist Profiles) is smooth and efficient. The app’s responsiveness on both iOS and Android devices is consistently reliable.
Value for Money
SoundCloud's pricing structure offers flexible options:
- Free Tier: Provides access to the entire music library but with limitations on audio quality and the lack of offline listening.
- SoundCloud Go (Monthly): Offers ad-free listening, high audio quality, and offline downloads for approximately $5.99 per month.
- SoundCloud Go+ (Annual): Provides all the benefits of SoundCloud Go at a reduced annual rate of around $59.99.
Considering the vast library available and the features offered in the premium tiers, SoundCloud Go represents good value for users who frequently listen to music and require offline access or ad-free listening. The annual subscription offers even greater savings.
Conclusion
SoundCloud remains a vital player in the music streaming landscape – a platform uniquely positioned by its focus on independent artists and user-generated content. While improvements could be made regarding audio quality, search functionality, and UI consistency, the app’s strengths – namely its massive library, vibrant community, and support for emerging talent – continue to attract millions of users worldwide. For anyone seeking music beyond the mainstream or interested in discovering new artists, SoundCloud is undoubtedly worth exploring. It’s a powerful tool for both listeners and musicians alike, cementing its place as one of the most innovative platforms in the world of digital music.

I love how there are sped up/ slowed down versions of songs. I've used SoundCloud for only a year now, but I much recommend this over Spotify. It sucks how it's not on Xbox, though! Its also a bit annoying when you have to pay for the premium subscription for certain songs. But otherwise, it's a perfect music streaming app! 110% recommend edit: having lyrics would be super cool! the one thing Spotify has that this doesn't 😓 otherwise still doing me well!

This app would get 5 stars but they keep popping up their upgrade ad, I think they'd do better if they just left it alone and let people just find the button to upgrade, other than that I wish some of the older-ish songs (like pretty much anything from kiss or def leopard) would be available to anyone without the upgrade. besides that, it's a great app, I have different playlists for different things and you can choose if your stuff is public or not. Also you have skips. ads are annoying though.

soundcloud is a amazing alternative to apps like spotify. it allows a friendly user base, the only problem is how you cant access some songs due to your location, and most versions of the song isnt a original version. but otherwise, great app! it doesnt offer ads, and overall, its a great way to stream songs too! you can add songs publically without the need to create a artist account!

been my primary music app for over a year, maybe even close to two years tbh. even though it's an absolutely fantastic music finder/player, there is a tiny problem, different language speaking music like brazilian funk isn't always there when I need it most. Even then, a four star rating is a go to for me, this GOTTA be on the top three podium no kidding ❤️🔥

Been using soundcloud for years, definitely my preferred music streaming app, though it does lack many quality of life features that other apps like Spotify and YouTube music have. The 500 track limit for playlists is especially annoying. as a go+ member i really feel like i shouldn't have a limit when im paying for the premium experience. other than that, it's an excellent app.

I love this app, 10/10 not very much apps, works without wifi. But it accidentally deleted some songs in my Playlist after I logged out and then logged me back in. It's probably because I don't have wifi. I've been using this for years, and it has almost every single song for free, but some you have to pay for pro

Before, SoundCloud would randomly pause for a second then start up again (for *every* *single* song). It was annoying, but manageable. The new update completely broke the app. Now, if I accidentally swipe past a song and try to swipe back, the song sits frozen for 3 minutes, then says "Not Playable", even though I was just listening to it. I can trace this issue to the new update because it literally didn't start until I updated my app. Today. This app is slowly degrading and that makes me sad.

SoundCloud is a very good app for playing tons of different genres of music and many other tracks, and I'd recommend it above Spotify. The primary reason as to why I rated SoundCloud 4 stars is due to the fact how there's this phenomenon where when you go to your "Liked tracks" in the Library menu on the bottom of your screen, sometimes when I tap a specific song I want to play, it'll put on the song above or below it instead, and when I correct it by tapping my song, it'll play an ad. Annoying.

I have used the paid version for years and the latest updates have been disastrous. The app is stuck in dark mode with high contrast which I can not read due to disability and their customer service only says "At the moment, only dark mode is available on the app." Which does not address the ADA issue at all. Their next up feature is also broken and the app randomly stops in the middle of songs. I do not reccomend and I canceling my subscription until these issues are fixed.

The UI doesn't show artists that you should follow anymore, and the home page list has become shorter. I stopped using Spotify for this exact reason, I liked that Soundcloud had such a long scroll for a home page. Now it's been reduced to be shorter like Spotify and it kinda ticks me off. Also, the feed for the following isn't as appealing anymore. I came to SoundCloud bc I was sick of Spotify's UI and now SoundCloud seems to be going in the same direction. :( 5 stars changed to 3.
