Prisma Art Effect Photo Editor Review – A Deep Dive

Overview

Prisma Art Effect Photo Editor has rapidly become one of the most popular photo editing apps available, boasting over 61.8 million total installs and holding the coveted "Editor's Choice" designation on Google Play. This app’s core functionality centers around transforming ordinary photographs into stunning artistic renderings using a vast library of pre-defined filters designed to mimic the styles of renowned artists like Picasso, Munch, and Dali. The app’s immense user base (1,029,376 reviews averaging 4.545 stars) speaks volumes about its immediate appeal and effectiveness in delivering visually striking results with minimal effort. Essentially, Prisma aims to democratize artistic expression by making high-quality artistic effects accessible to anyone with a smartphone.

Key Features

  • Extensive Filter Library: At the heart of Prisma lies its impressive selection of over 500 filters. These aren’t just simple color adjustments; they're meticulously crafted to emulate specific artistic styles, ranging from classic Impressionism and Cubism to more contemporary movements like Surrealism and Pop Art.
  • Style Transfer Technology: The app leverages a sophisticated style transfer algorithm, allowing users to apply these effects seamlessly onto their photos with impressive accuracy. The engine analyzes the content of the image and intelligently adapts the filter to create a believable artistic interpretation.
  • Real-Time Preview: Users can preview filters in real-time before applying them permanently, ensuring they achieve the desired aesthetic. This iterative process is crucial for achieving optimal results.
  • Basic Editing Tools: Alongside the art filters, Prisma includes standard photo editing tools like cropping, rotating, brightness, contrast, saturation, and vignette adjustment – providing a degree of control beyond just stylistic filters.
  • Animated Effects (Prisma Studio): A significant addition is the integration of animated effects through "Prisma Studio," allowing users to create short looping videos with artistic styles applied, offering greater creative possibilities.
  • Social Sharing: The app facilitates easy sharing of edited photos directly to social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Strengths

  • Exceptional Artistic Effects: Prisma’s primary strength is undeniably the quality and variety of its art filters. The results are genuinely impressive and often resemble professional artwork. The ability to transform a simple selfie into a Van Gogh-esque landscape is remarkable.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Despite the complex underlying technology, the app's interface is remarkably intuitive and easy to navigate. The filter selection is logically organized, making it simple for users of all skill levels to find what they’re looking for.
  • Constant Updates & New Filters: Prisma continually adds new filters and features through regular updates, keeping the experience fresh and exciting for existing users. The “Editor's Choice” status reflects this ongoing investment in improving the app.
  • Viral Popularity & Community: The large user base fosters a strong sense of community, with countless examples of stunning Prisma-edited photos shared across social media, inspiring further creativity.

Areas for Improvement

  • Processing Time: Applying complex filters can sometimes be noticeably slow, particularly on older or less powerful devices. Optimizing the processing algorithms would significantly improve the user experience.
  • Filter Overload (Beginner Users): The sheer number of filters available can be overwhelming for new users. A more guided onboarding experience or a curated selection of recommended filters could be beneficial.
  • Limited Control over Individual Filters: While basic editing tools are present, users desiring granular control over individual filter parameters (e.g., adjusting specific color channels within an artistic filter) would benefit from more advanced options.
  • Prisma Studio Feature – Learning Curve: The Prisma Studio feature, while innovative, has a steeper learning curve than the core photo editing functionality. Improved tutorials and documentation are needed to make it accessible to a wider audience.

User Experience

The overall user experience is generally positive. The app feels polished and responsive, with smooth transitions between filters and minimal lag. The real-time preview feature is exceptionally well-implemented, allowing users to visually assess the impact of each filter before committing to its application. Navigating through the filter library is intuitive, and the social sharing integration is seamless. However, as mentioned previously, processing times can occasionally disrupt the flow, particularly when applying more complex filters.

Value for Money

Prisma is completely free to download and use, supported by optional in-app purchases. These purchases primarily unlock additional filters and features, offering users a way to support the app's development while still enjoying a substantial portion of its functionality without spending any money. The monetization strategy is reasonable and doesn’t feel overly intrusive.

Conclusion

Prisma Art Effect Photo Editor represents an impressive achievement in mobile photo editing technology. Its ability to transform photos into stunning artistic renderings with ease makes it a standout app within the photography category. While there are minor areas for improvement, particularly regarding processing speed and filter complexity, the strengths – including its exceptional filters, user-friendly interface, and vibrant community – far outweigh the weaknesses. Given its "Editor's Choice" status and massive user base, Prisma is undoubtedly worth downloading and exploring, especially for anyone seeking to add a touch of artistic flair to their photos or simply enjoy experimenting with creative effects. It’s a powerful tool that empowers creativity in everyone.

Fantastic app, the level of artistry that the A.I. can achieve is incredible. Beautiful works of art in a handful of seconds and most of them free. By far the most interesting filters to apply to personal photos, and Prisma executes this technology better than other apps of it's kind. The perpetual prompt to upgrade to Premium is annoying to be sure, but the software you're allowed to access with out paying is certainly worth the frustration. Import, Save, Export filtered photos. Really awesome.

Unfortunately the feature to save the original photo has failed me a few times while taking photos with the app. If the wording is just meant to say it won't overwrite the original photo then it does it's job, but if it's supposed to save the unmodified photo taken with the in-app camera function then I've not been able to get that to work. The art the app creates is awesome, but from now on I'll just use my camera and then edit afterwards.

Yes! The latest update adds a zoom function and finally I'm able to fine tune effects again. This is most welcome as before wifhout a landscape mode it was a lot of guess work which limited function. (Took me a minute to figure out the new effect intensity location and I like it!) The frames are a nice addition. Prisma is one of my favorite photo apps and now it's back to a higher level of control with ability to zoom! Great work!

FEATURES REMOVED. After I PAID 2X. I already bought this app for a lifetime on a different account, but I had to buy it AGAIN here, and now it's a year subscription! They removed the option to auto-save every image rendered, and we are locked out of the variables that control the NN. And you can't roll-back to a previous version before they REMOVED FEATURES. That cripples this app for me. I really liked it. Guess I'll let my subscription run out after paying 4 PERMANENT PREMIUM. WHOMP WHOMP

The only problem is that is getting out of hand with the sexuality. Some of the posts are too graphic and sensual. I have children who like taking pictures and editing them with new colors and styles but won't let them use it because of the content of some people. I also would like to be able to un-select some followers that have explicit content and there's no way of doing it. Otherwise the app is great!

Got 0 complaints......just wish ALL the filters were free 👀. Rather than that amazing app, turns every single photo into a legit poster for a movie. Very happy with this app, would recommend it to everyone. I'm having way too much fun with it and turning every pic I take/download/screenshot into masterpieces of art. Very well done, easy to use and no basic filters like in other apps, these completely change your photos

Offers a number of artsy filters in the basic version. They can be adjusted for contrast, saturation, etc., and also for transparency. One looks like an 1800s English print; another like an acrylic painting, and many more. There is also a different one-day-only filter each day. (You can only use that filter that day.) I haven't found a convincing watercolor filter among them. For that, buy Impresso.

Love this app. I do a lot of photography and digital editing and this is a fast and simple way to get some really nice textures and effects to work with. All top quality, nothing looks cheesy. I do wish I could make the ad vanish from the bar, since I did pay for this, and it took like a week for all the filters to unlock after I paid BUT it is worth it.

IT'S FREE! You have to dodge the Payment screens, and most filters have to be bought, but there's plenty of free filters and the options are great (for a free app). I end up using PSexpress (also a free app) to do more enhancements, so the in-app edits could be better. I would consider buying if file sizes/resolution options were made larger (much larger).

I want my money back. The filters are absolute garbage, I was going to use this as inspiration for my own artwork and I saw an impressive Facebook ad with a watercolor filter. I thought "wow, actually that looks really nice." I should have done the trial, but it gave me a half off year, and I thought why not, it looks good. It's not. It's false advertising and I want my money back.
