Photoshop Express Photo Editor Review – A Solid Choice for Casual Editing

Overview

Photoshop Express, developed by Adobe, is a mobile photo editor designed to bring powerful image editing capabilities to users of all skill levels. With over 282 million installs and an impressive average rating of 4.5 stars, the app has clearly resonated with a massive audience seeking a convenient way to enhance their photos on-the-go. The core premise – “PHOTO EDITING MADE FUN AND EASY” – is ambitious, aiming to demystify professional photo editing tools for everyday users. The free version offers an extensive suite of features, and the inclusion of AI image generation adds another layer of functionality. This review delves into whether Photoshop Express truly delivers on its promise and assesses its strengths, weaknesses, user experience, and overall value.

Key Features

Photoshop Express boasts a remarkably comprehensive feature set, designed to cover a broad range of editing needs:

  • One-Tap Edits: The app’s signature feature allows users to quickly apply pre-defined enhancements like “Vibrant,” “Vintage,” or “Black & White” with a single tap.
  • Manual Adjustments: Beyond the one-tap options, users have granular control over exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, warmth, and tint. Sliders provide precise adjustments for nuanced editing.
  • Retouching Tools: A dedicated retouching suite includes tools for removing blemishes, smoothing skin, reshaping teeth, and adjusting eye color – essential for selfie enhancements.
  • Text & Stickers: Users can add text overlays with various fonts and styles, along with a library of stickers to personalize their images.
  • Collage Maker: The app’s collage maker allows users to combine multiple photos into creative layouts, offering pre-designed templates and freeform arrangement options.
  • AI Image Generator (Magic Enhance): This innovative feature uses Adobe's AI technology to automatically enhance the quality of a photo – boosting resolution, sharpening details, and improving overall color balance. It’s surprisingly effective on a wide range of images.
  • Face Editor: An advanced tool that allows users to alter facial features like nose size, eye shape, and jawline with surprising accuracy.
  • Filters: A vast library of filters provides a quick route to different artistic styles, from classic film looks to modern effects.

Strengths

Several factors contribute to Photoshop Express's popularity:

  • Ease of Use: The app’s intuitive interface is one of its biggest strengths. The one-tap edits are genuinely useful for beginners, while the more advanced tools are still relatively easy to master.
  • Powerful AI Integration: The Magic Enhance feature is a standout innovation. It consistently produces impressive results, often dramatically improving the look of low-resolution or poorly lit photos without requiring significant manual adjustments. The AI face editor is similarly effective and fun to experiment with.
  • Broad Feature Set: The sheer number of tools available within the free version is remarkable. Users have access to a professional-level editing suite without paying a penny.
  • Performance & Stability: Despite its complexity, Photoshop Express runs smoothly on most devices and rarely crashes or freezes. Adobe’s optimization efforts are clearly evident.
  • Large User Base & Support: The massive user base translates into abundant online tutorials, forums, and support resources readily available to help users troubleshoot issues and learn new techniques.

Areas for Improvement

Despite its strengths, Photoshop Express isn't without shortcomings:

  • Interface Clutter: The abundance of features can lead to a somewhat cluttered interface, particularly for novice users who may be overwhelmed by the options. A more streamlined layout could improve usability.
  • Limited RAW Support: Currently, the app doesn’t natively support RAW image formats, restricting its capabilities when working with professional cameras. This is a notable omission given Adobe's history in photography.
  • Watermark (Premium): While the free version is generous, it adds a subtle watermark to exported images. Removing this watermark requires subscribing to the premium version.
  • Advanced Layer Support: The app lacks true layer support, limiting complex editing workflows that professional photographers rely on.

User Experience

The user experience within Photoshop Express is generally positive, especially considering its accessibility. The onboarding process is straightforward and guides users through the basic features. Navigation is primarily achieved through a bottom navigation bar offering quick access to key tools. Swiping gestures are utilized for various actions like zooming and adjusting sliders. The app’s responsiveness is commendable, ensuring smooth transitions between editing operations. However, as mentioned previously, the interface can feel overwhelming at times, particularly when exploring the numerous settings and options.

Value for Money

Photoshop Express offers exceptional value for money due to its free availability. The feature set within the free version rivals that of many paid photo editors. The premium subscription ($9.99/month or $49.99/year) unlocks advanced features like unlimited export resolution, removal of the watermark, access to exclusive filters and effects, and priority support. While this is a reasonable price for professionals or serious hobbyists, casual users may find the free version sufficient.

Conclusion

Photoshop Express Photo Editor successfully bridges the gap between accessible mobile photo editing and professional-grade capabilities. Its intuitive interface, powerful AI integration (Magic Enhance), and extensive feature set make it an excellent choice for anyone seeking to enhance their photos quickly and easily. While there are areas where improvement could be made – primarily regarding interface clutter and RAW support – the app’s strengths significantly outweigh its weaknesses. With a massive user base and a generous free version, Photoshop Express is undoubtedly one of the best photo editing apps available on mobile devices, offering exceptional value for money and empowering users to unleash their creativity. It's a highly recommended option for both beginners and experienced photographers alike.

This app is a staple for me when it comes to editing my photos. Excellent settings, no annoying ads, and it's easy to use. I'm in love with the new update to the overlays!! I am getting what I assume is a glitch now and again where there is no opacity slider for overlays, but that's the only issue I've ever really had with this app. ** This review WILL change and I will feel very negatively about the app if currently free features I love become locked behind a paywall though!

I just use the free version to touch up the occasional pic, and I love it! You can fix everything from lighting issues to tint to blemishes and fine-tune it as much as you want. There are some features that would be nice to access in the few version, like songs of the filters or limiting certain adjustments to the background, etc, but it's still a really good app for the amateur who doesn't want their work to show!

I love it! If you are using the Google photos app, you can access this app through one of the editing tools/buttons. Lots of really cool options to play with once you get there too. Easy to use. The perfect balance in regards to what you can do and how much time you spend learning how to do it. Being a somewhat lazy creature myself, this means you don't really need to spend a ton of time learning how to use it. It's really fun to edit with and yields great results!

Time to update my earlier review. Someone at Adobe listened, and the text watermark has returned as a standard feature. There are still changes I'd like to see, such as options remaining in one place and ability to type in values for corrections instead of using the sliders. Photos still look good when edited, and the app is pretty easy to use. Quite a lot can be done with this app, and it works well for folks like me who only need to perform a few basic edits. Recommended!

If you're a professional (I sub the full Adobe line) trying to resize and photos on the go, look elsewhere. You can crop, but it won't take until you save it, then reopen it, which is incredibly ridiculous. You can't see how large the file size will be while saving, so it's useless for file prep. This might be a fun app for messing around but it does not have some of the basic and simple tools a pro will need while on the go.

I wish there was 16:9 for vertical so I don't have to use the custom setting each time for the crop. Also the exposure don't work like the desktop Photoshop. It over exposes when I barely move the slider and it washes everything out like turning the contrast too high. I can't lighten the picture without it washing the highlights out even after lowering the highlights setting. Update: the exposure in Snapseed works as good as the exposure on the PC Photoshop. So why can't it be made to work?

First day using it, but so far it is very easy to use, has so many filter options to chose from. Will only edit with PS from this day forward. I didnt think I would like the watermark feature as much as I do. I wish I could put my personal watermark in, or even move and adjust watermark provided. Maybe there is a way? But still learning, creating amazing photos and having fun in process. 1 year later... still loving it!!

It's glitchy - the second time I used it, I had to restart my phone to get it to work, but when it does work, it's quick and easy to edit a photo or create a collage. It certainly does not even come close to editing on a desktop (I mention that after hearing some people's comments about editing on a phone), but I just want to do minor stuff with my cell phone pics, and this works just fine.

Something strange has happened. Adobe changed the interface drastically with an update in dec 2023, it negatively affected usability for many users. Us users made it known we don't like the extra steps that have been added to do simple things. Adobe responded to many reviews saying the feedback has been noted. THE MENUS HAVE BEEN RESTORED!!! When you want to make adjustments your slider options are in one line, you scroll back and forth to make all your changes. NO EXTRA MENUS! Thank you Adobe!

I love all the options, not all of them are free, but there's a lot more free selections than any other apps I've used like this, & there's also no ads at all. The only complaint I have is when making a collage, trying to zoom without rotating is irritatingly difficult af. There should be an option to fit/fill the pic to the frame like other apps have, if there was one I couldn't find it. Also not having the blue frame around ur selection in collage mode. It blocks the background.
