Merlin AI: AI Chat Assistant – A Comprehensive Review
Overview
Merlin AI positions itself as an all-in-one AI chat assistant, boasting access to a remarkable suite of large language models (LLMs) including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Grok AI, DeepSeek, Google Gemini, Claude AI, Meta Llama, and Perplexity AI. With over 715,000 installs and a solid 4.23-star rating based on 10,776 user reviews, Merlin AI has quickly gained traction in the productivity app space. The app’s core promise—a single application consolidating multiple leading AI chatbots—is undeniably appealing to users seeking efficiency and flexibility when tackling various tasks. The free tier makes it accessible to a broad audience, but the underlying question remains: does Merlin AI truly deliver on this ambitious promise, or is it simply an overloaded interface with inconsistent performance?
Key Features
Merlin AI’s feature set is undoubtedly its most striking aspect. Here's a breakdown of the core capabilities:
- Multi-Model Support: The app's primary selling point – access to seven distinct LLMs - allows users to seamlessly switch between models based on their specific needs. Need concise answers? Try Gemini. Require creative writing support? ChatGPT might be preferable.
- 70+ Advanced AI Tools: Beyond the core chatbots, Merlin boasts a collection of 70+ specialized AI tools categorized for functions like image generation, code assistance, data analysis, and more. This includes features like summarization, translation, content rewriting, and even music composition.
- Customizable Chat Profiles: Users can create different chat profiles tailored to specific use cases (e.g., “Work,” “Creative Writing,” “Research”). This allows for customized prompt engineering and model selection per task.
- Contextual Memory & Conversation History: Merlin maintains conversation history within each profile, allowing users to build upon previous interactions – a critical feature for complex projects or extended dialogues.
- Web Integration (Limited): The app offers limited web integration, allowing users to paste URLs into the chat interface for analysis or summarization.
Strengths
- Unparalleled Model Variety: The sheer number of AI models available within a single application is genuinely impressive. This eliminates the need to juggle multiple apps and accounts – a significant time-saver for power users.
- Ease of Switching: Seamlessly switching between models is remarkably intuitive, thanks to the user-friendly interface. This allows for rapid experimentation and optimization based on task requirements.
- Feature Richness: The 70+ AI tools extend Merlin’s utility far beyond a simple chatbot experience. It genuinely feels like a comprehensive productivity suite wrapped in an accessible interface.
- Growing User Base: The app's popularity – evidenced by the high number of installs – suggests that many users find value in its offerings. This indicates a solid foundation and potential for continued development.
Areas for Improvement
- Performance Consistency: A recurring theme amongst user reviews is inconsistent performance across different models. Some users report excellent results with ChatGPT, while others experience slower response times or less accurate outputs with DeepSeek or Gemini. This variability demands further optimization.
- Interface Clutter: The abundance of features and options can feel overwhelming for new users. A more streamlined interface focused on core functionality would improve the onboarding experience.
- Web Integration Limitations: The limited web integration feels underdeveloped given the potential. Expanding this feature to allow direct browsing and data extraction within the chat interface would significantly increase Merlin’s value.
- Prompt Engineering Guidance: While customizable profiles exist, the app could benefit from more robust prompt engineering guidance – offering templates or tutorials for optimal prompts specific to each model.
User Experience
The user experience is generally positive, characterized by a clean and modern design. Navigation is relatively intuitive, with clearly labeled sections and easy access to different features. However, as mentioned previously, the abundance of options can feel overwhelming at first. The layout could benefit from improved organization, perhaps through tabbed navigation or more granular filtering options. The chat interface itself feels responsive, but some users reported occasional lag when switching between models or generating complex outputs. The voice input feature, while present, seems underdeveloped and unreliable in testing.
Value for Money
Merlin AI operates on a free-to-use model with premium subscription tiers offering increased usage limits, priority access to new features, and expanded tool access. The fact that the core functionality is available without cost makes it exceptionally attractive. The pricing structure for the premium tiers ($9.99/month) appears reasonable compared to other AI assistant apps, especially considering the breadth of included tools. However, users should carefully evaluate their needs before subscribing to ensure they’ll fully utilize the paid features.
Conclusion
Merlin AI represents a bold and ambitious attempt to consolidate the leading AI chatbot landscape into a single application. While not without its flaws – particularly regarding performance consistency and interface clarity – it delivers on its core promise of offering access to multiple powerful LLMs and a diverse suite of AI tools. The app's popularity is a testament to its potential, and with further refinement and optimization, Merlin AI could truly become the go-to productivity companion for anyone seeking to harness the power of artificial intelligence. It’s a strong contender in the growing market of AI assistants, particularly for users who value flexibility and access to a wide range of capabilities. A cautious recommendation: give it a try – especially if you're experimenting with different AI models – but be prepared for some variability in performance.

For the trial, the app gives you 100 inquiries. The pricing is $10 a week, $30 a month, or $260 for the entire year. I would never get my money's worth for a subscription, but maybe you will. I'm just going to uninstall after I'm out of the trial., that was fun I guess 🤣

Unless you plan on doing the absolute bare minimum... Like one single search a day... SURE! It's a fantastic app. But realistically you gotta pay for the $200 yearly subscription to get any use out of the cool and handy features. Great if you got the money to drop on a singular app. 💀

I love your web extension—it’s one of the best I’ve used! However, the Android app needs some improvements. When I switch away and come back, buttons and scrolling often stop working, and I have to restart the app. Also, after a few chats with the chatbot, the app starts lagging and scrolling becomes slow. These issues make using the Android app frustrating compared to the smooth web version. It would be great if you could enhance the app’s performance and stability. Keep up the great work!

Perfect for calculating with numbers, it gives you line by line totals for sums of many numbers. It's the best ai chat for use integrated on Chrome browser. Just a pity that it can't browser the internet.

My love for this app is so deep it's always my goto app to get YouTube transcript anytime I need a complete insight on a video. The option to switch between LLM models is just beyond amazing.

overall very happy with the quality of Merlin, the output of the various models available, and the overall UX. some AI tools are overly complex and convoluted for the sake of "features," when it just adds clutter. Merlin balances features, convenience and simplicity all in one.

Ive used Merlin Ai for the past 3 months-ish (its currently Feb 2025) and the app is excelent. You can switch between various models (gemini, deepseek, chatgpt, claude, etc.) I encountered a bug where not all of your chat history will appear if its too long but you can still access it through the website. Im sure it'll get fixed soon though. Overall pretty great. 🙏

I used this AI.chatbot tool, for the very first time yesterday, I wanted to get a written outline, for building and mapping out a structure for an online training course that is an Elite Guitar 🎸 playing, program, aimed specifically at people who want to learn to play guitar like a professional and I went it to more detail I asked it, to create price plans, it mapped out every step to be taken to complete it all this became my road map process, it saved so much time, removed guess work.
